This is so interesting! And great that you manage with the phal in water. As I said in an earlier comment, I've read it's pretty hard and that phals are one of those orchids that does not like water culture very much, but obviously your plant is proving them wrong or being a good example of the exception to the rule.

Well done!

I've got only one plant in water culture at the moment and that's a dendrobium kingianum (of all things). It likes it as well, from the look of it. It grows keikis and new roots. It's a test bunny. It was rootless and I could have opted for different things, but I chose to put it in a jam jar with water.

Last night i put a few more orchids in water 1 of them is a vanda.. Had a success with another vanda aswell but i fear i made a mistake by cutting this one off.. it started to drop leaves but when i cut it the stem looked like it was in a great condition.. Then again i dont want to take any chances. Not as fond of vandas as i am of phals though. All together i have 2 phals 2 vandas and a orchid from taiwan in water

I really dont know what orchid that is but its VERY different from all the other i have ever seen. The tag says: Epc. Rene Marques ' Flame Thrower " HCC/AOS. Those pictures at the bottom was taken when i got it from there on it deteriorated not sure what went wrong though.

It's an hybrid of epidendrum and cattleya, called an epicattleya.

I saw that now when i just entered the tag details on google now haha didnt think it will be that simple. And that is actually a Orchid with ID not a NOID. Dont have alot of those. Most of them are hybrids.

I have some bad news on this poor fella that i have in the water. For some reason the spike broke off before it could develop properly and it went down hill from there.. luckily i caught it fast enough and saved it again. This Phal just wont give up lol. since then i have a few more other orchids in water culture and they are doing great. When i have the time i will take some pictures and post them for you all to see. and i will give you a updated picture on how the phal looks after the down hill run.

Hi!

Fellow SA'ican here! Was wondering if you have any new tips learnt along the way with water culture? Am thinking of doing the same to a struggling Gongora Galeata...

I just looked at a few videos about this. The plant is suspended so that only the roots are in the water. It is kept there for 2 days and the water removed for five days. Then repeat. That's why I came here to see what you guys thought.

I was going to say that it is similar to Epi. 'Plastic Doll', which you can see here: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2...tic%20Doll.jpg

In any case, it is an Epidendrum hybrid (or Epidendrum and Cattleya hybrid), and can be grown similar to other Epidendrums. These are notoriously intolerant of wet roots, so I would not try this one in water culture.
