D, can you send me the recipe for the cig butt tea? You are right, I will take the plant out, not use taking chances sealed or not as you said. I do plan on treating the 'chid multiple times. I also chopped off the leaf that they seemed to be drawn to the most...it was week and yellow looking anyways so off it went. I dunked the entire plant in the neem oil solution, the bottle recommended 2 tablespoons of neem oil to a gallon of water. I have treated it twice so far.

Ross, I took the little one out of it's potting medium....originally it was mounted and had a small bed of sphag for it to sit on, on the mount. It wasn't doing so well and I thought I saw signs of scale before I unmounted it and tried cleaning it. I unmounted it and put it in sphag moss since it does well for nursing plants back for me. I threw away the all of its potting medium, I didn't want to risk it!

I normally take a "greener" approach to dealing with pests, but when it comes to scale I pull out the big guns. I'm using Bonide systemic pesticide on my Bllra since they are sucking insects, and I've done a couple wipe downs with alcohol to get rid of the ones I could see. I'll repeat this process for as long as it takes to get rid of it. The plant is also in quarantine. I don't want it near any of my other plants. Scale spreads like crazy!

I looked for this in the garden section of my local Fred Meyers grocery store and since it is not the gardening season, they have really scaled back on the products they have available. I was not able to find this unfortunately.

I got mine at our local feed store. They also have a nursery and house plants.

Terri, I was able to clear my Bllra of scale with Neem oil. Seems scale likes certain plants (or at least migrates to certain orchids.)

I let the 'butts' sit in about a cup of water for about a week outside in the sun, strained it then added an additional cup of water water and equal parts (2 cups) alcohol.

2 questions: what's "water water"?

and what type of alcohol? Will Jim Beam be OK?

Oops .. I hiccupped on the water .. just one water will do ..
Rubbing alcohol is much cheaper .. Use Jim Beam internally if you have scale (or not) not on your orchids ..
