I was going to go down to the Lowes (new one nearby - the people there actually CARE about the plants they have) and buy one of those cheap bag ones. That way if I kill it I don't feel like a total jerk.

The psychopsis and angraecum magdalenae seem tolerant of both higher and lower lighting from what I have been reading. They don't seem to mind sudden changes in light too much either. I keep mine in higher light but many seem to keep them in lower light. After a very dark winter, I can put these right outside into higher light without any problem. They are both very easy to grow.
I burned an orchid in a south-facing window last fall. I had not realized that a north/west window at this time of year would be so hot. Moving it into the shade was the right thing to do.

Ooh, psychosopsis. You should so get one. They can have a huge bloom spike and bloom one flower at a time for a year or more. And they have wonderfully purple spotted foliage, at leat some do. They're super easy to grow and flower and farily tolerant of different light levels, basically grow like a catt.

Wow! I agree. A big box store that cares for its plants is unusual. Must have a great manager or workers. Cattleyas are nice but once you see all the colors and discover how many are fragrant, you soon end up addicted. Some need very high light while others will do fine with your window. Have fun!

I know, right? Lol. I haven't actually *seen* their orchids (though I think that one of these days I am going to swing in to that section), but I've seen the rest of their plants on the walk up to the store and directly inside and they all look vibrant, crisp and healthy...unlike the Lowes where I used to live, which was...disgusting, I guess for lack of better phrasing, haha.

Is there anything I should look for specifically when selecting one for this window?

I love my psychopsis Mendenhall 'Hildos'. It is one of the few non-fragrant orchids I never consider giving away. I bought it for the leaves as they are marvelous. Mine is still working on becoming blooming-sized so I haven't had the pleasure of those crazy blooms yet.
