My dad recently gave me this division of a cymbidium that my grandmother kept. I'm tempted to repot it as it looks over potted and the medium seems like potting mix; it's really fine and "soil-y" under the bark visible on the surface. He said he used "medium orchid mix" and it has medium to good drainage.
If the mix is fine, would it be worth redisturbing the roots to down size the pot?
It could live in this potting mix but you would have to really watch the watering. I would repot it into a coarser mix. Let this dry out very well and when the pot is light weight just tip it over and the whole plant will spill out. This will lessen any damage to the roots. Then pot it into a coarser mix. Cyms can grow in a fine potting mix but they will get root rot if kept too wet. This potting soil won't allow enough air through the mix for good plant growth.
