Hey,

In was curious how long does it take for phals to mature.
A plant labeled as "seedling" is how far away from blooming?

The answer is dependent on the plant's ancestry. For example, I own a Phalaenopsis Gigantea hybrid seedlings in a community pot. It was deflasked July 2011 into its current configuration. The leaves are about 2" in length. These will stay in their community pot probably until the end of this year. I'll repot them in January 2014. They should be bloom size by July 2014 but since these bloom in the winter, I don't expect first blossom until January or February 2015. Based on that calculation, one of the answers is four years.

Some hybrid Phalaenopsis may take a shorter period of time. The plants offered in retail stores probably take about two to three years to grow from deflasking to full flower--as they are forced into a super growth program. I have several of these plants. When these plants complete their blooming, they seem to go into a hibernation stage--they do absolutely nothing. But after a year or so of maintaining them, they start leafing, rooting and often spiking into even larger blooms.

I was looking for Phalaenopsis Hawaii Dragon Girl ( Dragon Tree Eagle ‘DT1’ X Penang Girl ‘Ching Ruey’).

Guess it's not really worth the wait ( couple of years ).

Yes, I believe it is worth the wait. In the meantime buy some already in bloom plants and enjoy them until your seedling comes into bloom <S>
