OK, I get the message.
I just came back from our orchid club member's GH, and he had some HUGE beautiful stunning orchids- these are prize winning champion orchids.
He is using a homemade 'mud' like fertilizer!
I think I might have to torture him to get the secret formula. He didn't want to tell me!!!!
I even bought 4 phals from him!!!!

If he won't release the formula to you, you might be able to buy some of the finished product from him instead.
It can't hurt to at least get some.
I'm not sure that the fertiliser will change an orchid from ordinary to prize winning but I'm sure it can affect the growth somewhat. The plants might have been prize winning no matter what he used.......but don't tell him I said that......lol.

There's probably no substitute for good culture. More important then fertilizer are: water, light, temps. Last would be fertilizer.
Feeding a poorly grown plant will just hasten its demise.
Your friend probably supplied a good environment first, then the fertilizer was just icing on the cake!

Right on, Peter!
The trick with feeding is providing enough, but not too much at any one time. That's one reason folks often see improved growth when moving plants to semi-hydroponics - because the plant is constantly exposed to a nutrient solution, it will absorb as much as it needs, given the other aspects of the cultural conditions, and is not limited by the drying of the solution, which renders the ions unavailable.
One other thing to keep in mind is that quite often a person learns of a "miracle nutrient" and gives it a try. Lo and behold! The plants start growing better. THAT STUFF IS AMAZING!!!
In actuality, the grower had been severely underfeeding via an inattentive, hit-or-miss attitude. Now that there's something NEW, he's paying closer attention and is actually feeding his plants well, irrespective of the chemicals used.
