Good point. Yeah, I am thinking my orchids might like the backyard. I have a pond and after getting the waterfall running, I noticed increased vitality in all the plants back there. The humidity and tree covering would probably be superb for the orchids.

Sounds lovely! You can also look at hanging orchids from tree branches, just make sure your don't hand so many as to stress the tree! (Yup, know someone who did that). I also hand small pots (1-2") from potted plants such as my lemon tree, fig or gardenia.

I like the bench! Is the cardboard permanent? Not sure if it will hold up to humidity/moisture. Anything that promotes air movement and gets the plants off the ground will work.

I think it looks good. Where is north, south, east, west from the picture?

It's a laundry drying rack from Ikea, but it's the only thing I could find in a pinch -- the cardboard keeps the smaller pots from falling through since it's pretty wide between wires, again, what I could find in a pinch. It's not the most sturdy thing, so I can't put them all on top.

I bought some great wire mesh bins from The Container Store. They are well suited for smaller pots. They are kitchen drawer separators. Maybe this will work for you. Otherwise, I say go to the hardware store when you have a chance and set some plastic fencing and have them cut the pieces to size. That's what I use on my larger outdoor benches.
