A NOID phal from lowes for $.75 bought after Christmas is in bloom. Also Lowe's Maxillaria just done blooming and I have a couple of Lowes' cattleyas and a Brassavola that are doing quite well. Now one of my rescue Lowes' phals bloomed with the really oddly mutilated shaped flowers- I suspect it has a virus. I gifted it to the person that had no other plants. I would suggest to be on a lookout for the viruses. While they probably spray expensively for pests, virus is harder to ID.

Jesscorine, put a little slug and snail bait on top of the soil, or go out in the night with your flashlight and pick the ignites off. I use the ferrous slug bait as it is harmless to people and pets. This happened to me with a beautiful yellow cymbidium, one day it was ready to bloom, next day the flowers had holes in them.

This iPad changes my words, I wrote IGGIES and it changed the word to ignite.

I can put salt under the pot for now right? I don't have the time (2 littles, and geographically single mom during the week) to shop for extra things right now

Yes that would work, but the slug may be in the pot media?

Hey everyone! I went to Lowes tonight, and I remember someone asking if they sell anything other than phals. I not only acquired a large cattleya (they had several - they're about as tall as my cats are sitting down, which is way larger than the teeny tiny bag ones they sell for $6), and I also saw a tag for encyclia? It was with the cattleyas and it looked cool, but I had never heard of it and was intimidated. Also my fiance said I have to kill or toss one to get more. =X I'll just keep adding them while he's not home...with the blinds down he'll never notice <_<

I was horrified to count the orchids on my upper back porch...99. I asked my husband how many he thought were up there and he said 26..They creep up on you, especially when you see them for sale after the flowers have dropped, but you know they will make more with the right environment t.

Bag orchids
Hi -on my recent visit to L.A I found those bag orchids from BETTER-GRO Cattleya's at Home Depot. As a Canadian I seldom have the opportunity to buy young orchids at that price Be aware, some of the plants showed rot. Mine is now happy in its new pot with bark, perlite and some charcoal and looks healthy.

You can get some great buys in the clearance section of Lowe's. I recently got a bagged orchid, Cattleya with a bloom spike started and it bloomed about 3 weeks later and was gorgeous.
