The orange tree can be sprayed with malathion after the flowers drop until a month before harvest. Horticultural oils will also work by smothering the mealies. We use a large tree sprayer to apply the stuff to our fruit trees. Some lawn services will also spray trees. Hope this helps.
The other issue with citrus is Citrus Greening. Now you practically have to spray the trees to prevent the spread of this nasty infection. Citrus also need regular doses of Ironite/iron. I grow my citrus in pots and in the winter must hand pollinate due to a lack of indoor bees. Hope this helps.
Concerning losing plants: I usually end up giving away plants to make space for one I want more. This is very difficult for me as usually the new owners inevitably begin to report problems and eventual loss (so the plants are going to their dooms when I give them away). When the rare plant death does happen in my possession, I either replace it or I order that plant I wanted more. I love my plants but...they are just plants. And, that onc. might just survive. I have a zygo I didn't want (not as fragrant as promised). My kids knocked it from the spot where I had it and seemingly killed it. It looked sort of like your oncidium, after a month. I was busy and tossed it in a zip-lock bag for disposal (I am careful about possibly spreading disease to my outside garden). It missed the garbage can. I found it a month ago...sprouting a new, healthy growth. So, you might have a similar experience. :|
