I ordered these two orchids, phal tai Lin red angel and c. New dawning flowers galore. I spent 12 dollars on the phal and 20 on the cat. Both of them are from hausermans. My only concern is the black splotches on the cat. Anyone know what it is?

Those black spots are very common on old dried sheaths. I usually peel those off the plant so bugs don't have a place to hide. If you don't it won't hurt anything.

I agree with Terri about removing the old dry material around the pseudobulbs. Pull off what you can and then get the material very wet and after a few minutes it will be even easier to remove. I also use a soft or medium bristle tooth brush to remove it. Fungus and insects can hide under there.
