I am pondering trying my hand with them.

It's normal for some Dens. I have a D Mingle's Sapphire (victoria-reginae x gonzalesii) which is seldom without buds and/or blooms; a trait it gets from the gonzalesii parent.

Dendrobium is a really big group which quite a variety of ways of blooming and of care conditions. So as Sonya says, it's normal for some.
