My bf came home with a pretty purple phal for me back in january and now I keep begging him to bring me more... so when I got it, it was from Price Chopper and needed some major TLC... three leaves fell off, but I managed to save it once I read up about them online...

Anyway, there's roots galore growing now, started about 2 weeks ago, and I'm just wondering... when can I expect to see a spike? How long do I need to wait to see those beautiful blooms again?

Most likely a spike will appear next fall or spring.
I'm gonna guess spring.
Some phals are summer bloomers, but more than likely yours isn't.
Phals grow roots and leaves for a while.
Stop.... sit there looking boring.
And then send up a spike.

aw. =[

That seems like so long to wait, even though it's cool seeing all the little changes every day. Guess that's more of an excuse to get more plants, though.

Thanks for the information! The way people talked, it sounded like soon after the roots came, a spike would follow. haha

You might enjoy some hybrids that bloom multiple times a year. Or some continuous bloomers.
The once a year phals can hold their flowers for months once they are accustomed to your home.

Oooh. Which ones are those? Or are they non-specific? I'd love to find some like that.

Another question to add... do roots form in between the leaves? Because I just saw something poking up through them this morning.

Yes aerial roots can form between the leaves. You'll see the white sheathing on a root. A spike had an end that look a little bit like a mitten. Sometimes you just have to wait and see

Good Luck!

Won't let me post an image for some reason... says the URL is blocked.

It's hard to tell... it's growing pointed upward, though... not familiar enough with roots to know if that's just the leaf pushing it that way.
