Flask den. kingianum seeds?
Default Flask den. kingianum seeds?

Should I flask the pollinated seeds of my dendrobium kingianum? They were naturally pollinated by the insects in my garden. What interests me is that next to the plant were a den delicatum "apple blossom" and den. delicatum "madam",so I might get some new hybrids. But then, it seems so much trouble and I have not done this before.

If flasking interests you in any way I would go for it, if it's going to be a hassle for you then I wouldn't bother. You're never going to know for sure which plant the pollen came from so they'd essentially be all NoIDs.

You'll know when they bloom several years from now if they're selfings of Dendrobium kingianum or whether they're a hybrid.

If you want to raise the seedlings, go ahead. Raising seedlings are always a challenge if you haven't done it before, so there's food for thought in this department.

If you want to go to the trouble of flasking and growing the seedlings on to flower, you should be able to tell the difference between a kingianum and a Gillian Leaney. That being said, unless you're talking about a really good quality kingianum, that kind of breeding is a little old, even for the US where there are a couple of nurseries starting to sell some pretty good quality lines at the moment. I'm not sure you're going to get anything other than washed out, raffle-table plants.

Thank you for your responses. I know now not to get my hopes up,but I'll experiment with these instead of throwing them away. I realize the hummingbirds /wasps have been very busy in the garden:>
