The old roots are not used to the lower humidity, that's why it's shriveling. Most of the times, these sellers don't let you into their greenhouses, so a lot of people don't realize how uncomfortable it is to be in there for long periods of time. Being that I've worked in a greenhouse before, I can tell you the humidity levels they keep it at is very high, and is very uncomfortable to be in for long periods of time.
Instead of these wood slat baskets or plastic net pots, try growing it in a regular clear plastic pot. That's how I've been growing several of my Vandas for years.

What do you put in the clear pot to plant them in? I have hydroton and plain old orchid bark and some lava, will any of those work? And are you talking about S/H pots or pots with holes underneath to drain or pots or pots without holes? Sorry if I sound dumb but after the cinnamon incident, I want to make sure I understand.

I use medium/large grade bark and it works just fine.
You can essentially use LECA, but I don't have too much experience with it, so I have a difficult time advising about this potting media.
I've never tried growing them with lava rock either, but hypothetically speaking, it should also work.
CHC should work too.
With a clear plastic pot and medium/large grade bark alone, I don't have to water everyday if I'm not able to.
