pictures would help me advice you.
if you just got this plant then let it be(dont fuss about it) have it acustomed to the new environment it is in.... find a watering regimen that will work for both of you....start weekly then every other day when it is warmer; then maybe if the media mix decays you can repot it(JL is a very reputable grower; I would trust the plant is healthy=no blemish on the leaves and the roots must be robust and thriving)
I take the train in the summer and the car service to go to JL, they have orchids I like and it is a reasonable deal....you can have lunch there; I always have the pastrami sandwitch with peach snapple

Sedirea japonica is temperature tolerant. Warm temperatures, ok. Cool temperatures, ok.

I don't think it should stay warm all year round though. The parts of Japan where this orchid originated from is not necessarily warm all year round.

I have had two of these. I killed the first one due to crown rot (repotted too low and was careless with watering). I have read that Sedirea japonica is susceptible to crown rot, so the second one I got was mounted. It seems to be doing well and putting out a lot of new roots. The only advise I can give is to be careful about getting water in the crown.

Sedirea japonica has the exact same growing habit as a Phalaenopsis - they DON'T naturally grow upright, they grow horizontally or pendulously off trees.

This explains the problem with crown rot to some degree with growing them potted.

So far everything is looking good, the people at the store said it doesn't need to be repotted just yet but what time of the year would you say is a good time to repot? I'm sort of haphazard with my phals and repot them whenever and they do fine.

Also, this plant is in a bark and perlite mix, the water seem to go right through, I've never used anythinc but moss, how often should I water it? It seems like the bark dries out daily but I'm afraid I'll over water it. What kind of potting soil do these guy enjoy?

I'd keep the Sedirea in the type of potting media it is growing in now. Watering once every 2 days is fine.

You can repot it now if you want to. As I said before, this is a far hardier species than most Phals, in my opinion. In my experience, it doesn't need to be pampered.

So bark is a good substrate? A lot of the pictures I see have it sitting on a big ball of moss so I was wondering what would be best. That's good to hear they're hardy, I'm really nervous about messing up since this guy was a little pricier than my usual orchid purchase (especially after I factor in the 1 hour drive haha)

I used to grow mine potted in a plastic pot with medium grade bark, outdoors, all-year-round. Grew fine. Did it this way for about 1 - 2 years before I decided to change out the medium to diatomite.

Diatomite worked too.
