You thought it was a species because it has a name, right? A species, as opposed to a NoID?
Species orchids are the original orchids that evolved in the wild, like wolves as opposed to dogs. An example of a species orchid would be
Phalaenopsis Schilleriana, from the Philippines.
There's nothing wrong with hybrids, however! They're often hardier and easier to grow indoors. There is also an ecological cost when species orchids are harvested from their natural habitat. Some are grown in greenhouses, but others are ripped from the trees. You can be sure that your hybrid orchids were never ripped from a tree.
I do name my plants. They're all NoIDs so they
definitely need names. I'm not going to refer to them by number, like the citizens in a sci-fi dystopia.
I'm a newbie and only have three. I started out naming them impulsively, and then later decided to name them thematically based on TV shows, so each plant has two names.
Eddie/Dyson = purple NOID, on death's door.
Montgomery/Kenzi = white mini NOID, absolutely thriving!
Anna/Bo = yellow NOID, seems to be doing OK.
