P. Sleeping Madonna

I was looking for information about one if my orchids, P Sleeping Madonna and didn't find much. I bought this on clearance with no blooms, so I was pleasantly surprised when it bloomed. Does Hilo lip simply mean a white lip on a contrasting color flower?

Are you taking the pictures with your phone? That used to happen to me with my old phone. If you're holding your phone horizontally to take the picture, then the file will end up rotated like that. It will look correct on your phone, but not on the computer. This is because the phone "knows" the correct rotation and will show you the picture right-side-up, but the actual file will still be sideways.

To fix it, just go into an image editing program and auto-rotate the whole batch of pictures after you upload them onto the computer.

You can also fix the rotation directly on your phone. Select the picture and then tell it to rotate 90 degrees clockwise and then save it.

From Googling on the web I gather that Hilo Lip can mean a pink Phal with white lip. But there is one actually registered with that name with the pink petals and white lip which is where the term likely comes from. It was registered in 1985 and likely the main one of that type. Your Sleeping Madonna is not a registered name so there is no information in the RHS orchid registry to say what its parentage is. I would just grow it as a regular Phal. It's very nice!

Hilo Lip is a famous hybrid, so people might use the name to easily mean pink phal with white lip, but it is a distict name for a specific hybrid.

Another famous is Malibu Madonna.

Yours has a name Madonna in it, so it is in that breeding line I guess.

I heard that Hilo Lip is not easy to grow, but since yours bloomed for you and yours isn't Hilo Lip, I guess it is a well behaved plant. lol

There is also a pale pink Phal. with white lip called Taida Sleeping and I saw a thread on another forum suggesting that Phal. Sleeping Madonna may be a cross of these two. But because it isn't registered you can't count on that for sure.

That makes perfect sense though. Sleeping Madonna from Malibu Madonna and Taida Sleeping.

Thanks all for the info! I obviously have a lot to learn. Before I started reading posts here I didn't even know there was a registry. Now I know where to go look up the names.
