Default new orchid! is this bud blast?

hello again, everyone!

I'm happy to report my three orchids are still alive - I haven't killed them yet! my purple is only just now dropping its blooms @.@ I'm amazed and have loved it.

so I ran down to Tom Thumb to pick up my vehicle registration...and well, started gawking at their dendrobiums...and then a very nice associate pointed me to their others @.@ quite a display. it was very hard enforcing my rule on myself of just one orchid per purchase, and no orchid over $10. regrettably, most of theirs in my budget seemed to be in poor shape, while everything not in my budget was glorious and beautiful...I brought one mini phal home. I'm under the impression the blooms won't last, but hopefully I'll see her bloom again.

soooo my question is, you can see, especially on the left spike, the buds are turning brown. is that bud blast? is there anything I can do for it for now?

It's very likely that those buds are experiencing bud blast. Sadly, with blooms, by the time they physically show bud blast, it's too late to do anything to stop it.

you might want to put it on the sink of the bathroom when you shower to let warm steam help with moisture....
your plant looks happy and healthy by the color of the leaves and the way it is perky....the peeking roots are also ok....
just give it the proper culture in your environment....trust your instincts

I agree with the others, it is 'bud blast' or some people call it 'bud drop'. The good news is that 'bud blast' doesn't indicate that there's anything wrong with the plant. It can be caused by sudden changes in temperature or getting dehydrated for a few days. Every orchid grower experiences some bud drop and some plants are more prone to it than others. Orchids in bud are very sensitive to changes in their environment, but once the flower is open, the plant is no longer as sensitive. So once the flowers are open, you can safely move an orchid to a different location or environment and the it won't affect the flowers at all.

Yes, bud blast for sure. Pretty common with those grocery store/hardware store phals. I see it all the time walking through there.
