I was amazed to see the large moss core in plants that I just bought today. A bit of rot was already setting in. Thanks, Bud, for prompting me to investigate. I took some pics and plan on starting a new thread on what people could expect when buying plants from local stores. Hopefully, it will aid to the "Phal abuse" education.

I would be very interested in that thread, Gail. Another useful thread idea might be a "Phal roots" thread, where people could post pictures of the roots they see when they inspect a new orchid. I would find that very useful.

I took the Home Depot orchid out of the 6'' pot this morning. It was very interesting. The moss on the outside looked pretty good, but it peeled right off. It looks like the Phal had been potted in a 4" pot, and then they took it out, wrapped it in new moss, and stuck it in a 6" pot. The moss in the middle was old, brown, and tightly packed. I don't know if that's what people mean when they talk about the moss core, but it took me a long time to pull it all out.

For all that, I think the roots looked pretty good. I put it in my 5" pot with some fresh moss and I hope it's happier now.
