What on earth????!!!!! My phal changed color
Default It has happened to me

Hi there I just found your post, I know it is whilw back but Just wanted to ask if you had solved the mistery. I have three phalaenopsis and one off them I got nearly 2 yeara ago in very poor state and with just one flower on it, it was purple as you can see in the photo, it finally is healhy again and rebloomed so imagine my surprise when fower openned all white with purple speckles. No way I have mixed plants as I only have three and one is mini, the other is huge old white. I am so buffled

This isn't so unusual as to be considered a real oddity. Someone pointed out tetraspis, which is quite prone to changes in color. I have a violacea hybrid that does the same, giving me different colors on the same spike. I also have a cornu-cervi that sometimes is peloric or sometimes not, on the same stem. Typically, it's just a genetic quirk of the plant, and so very rarely a cause for concern.

What on earth????!!!!! My phal changed color
Default My Phal also changed color

I bought my first 4 orchids Sept 2017 from Tropical World Garden Center in Boynton Beach, FL. I have photos of all 4 Phals. Today the second of that bunch is opening, and it is purple spotted, looking nothing like the original 4 Phals. I'll post photos. I don't like the way it looks, and I was so excited since I mothered this plant as my first orchids (I have 40 now, different varieties, and have been learning a bunch)....

I'm actually going to take it back to the Garden Center and see what they say/do...

I've attached 4 photos, the first 3 are the delicate white ones I bought 9/2017, and then there is the ugly opening purple bud. (I didn't post the other one I bought, because it is open now and looks just like what I had bought).

Too bad everyone pissed off that original poster. Mine now looks just like her photo.

It's especially upsetting when one is new to orchid growing and has babied the orchid for a year, so excited to see a spike and buds, and then this very different flower appears.

Etana
NOTE: the last photo was taken tonight and it's dark. I'll post another tomorrow in the light, and the flower will be more open.

It might be good to change your screen name from your email address to something else. This site has no security. Just FYI.

Interesting problem.

Some Phals I have seen advertised for sale have descriptions that say that they will be marked or a solid color, depending on conditions. So, this is not all that rare.

Phals can change color to a certain extent depending on the temperature when buds were developing. Warmer temperatures lead to less pink.

Color variation is not that unusual, not with some types of orchids and not with other plants. White to purple, in fact, is not really all that impossible. If one has ever grown Jasmine sambac 'Maid of Orleans', one might notice that, now and then, instead of the pure white flowers, one will get a few that are purple-hued. It is not unheard of, then, in the plant world.

Added to this, apparently, some vendors are taking advantage of Phals being affected by different conditions and they are advertising this as a bonus...the same Phal, two different types of blooms. Some of the blooms have more white, thus forming a pattern, some of the blooms have no white at all and are a solid purple. I come to the conclusion, therefore, that it would not be improbably that this an orchid that normally blooms white could possibly bloom purple..
