Default unfamiliar (to me) phal growth

Hi everyone,
Could someone tell me what is growing from the stem of my phal, please? (white arrow) I've never experienced this type of growth before.

I would appreciate your help,
Vicki

Thank you, Talila...
I don't recall ever seeing a spike growing from the base of any of my phals before, so this will be new to me.

Spikes usually grow under the 4th or 5th leaf. Your plant has only 4 leaves, that's why the spike grows from the base.

I agree, it's a spike.

I've had spikes grow higher than the 4th/5th leaf but I tend to find new spikes come out either around the same height, or higher than the previous spikes. It's likely to be coming from a spot that would have had a leaf covering it previously.

In my very limited experience. Spikes come out from the bottom of my plants. I keep looking! It is always a grand surprise!
