Really!! wow I definitely need to join up. I just went around my house and counted 17 I'd give up in a heartbeat and in a yr another 10 onc's I have to divide and almost all of them are named! Don't get me started on my Catt. Sagarik wax and Reed stem Epi's. I never knew that noids can be displayed and win awards at orchid shows. I have several beautiful reliable bloomers that I could have displayed a few weeks ago here at our orchid show. I will post pics of them tomarrow and I hope members will chime in and tell me if they could compete. Thanks for the eye opener, that's what I love about this site! It has helped me over and over.

I didnt know that noids could be judged at shows either untill last year when someone from our society picked up 3 nice Phal at a big box store on the way to help us set up our display. They ended up winning 2 blue ribbons! I was really disappointed at that. Even tho some of the judges knew what they had done! I guess they really wanted a ribbon! ....Jean

I understand. I got rid of all my orchids a few years ago (all noIDs).
I restarted the hobby 2-3 years ago and have about 25. There isn't a plant I need or want to acquire right now and have been thinking of culling a few. I did pick up a few at a show a couple of weeks ago but 3/5 were replacement or duplicates. I do keep my eyes on the auctions and what you all post, there may still be one out there I must have.

Jean NOIDs can only be submitted for ribbon judging. They are excluded from AOS judging. Winning ribbons is still pretty cool though.

I know the ribbons are cool but to have only purchased them that day, what satisfaction can there be in that...Jean

You could also try selling them on eBay, even if they are noIDs I bet if you don't have a reserve price any of them would sell...

The orchid shows I've been to have usually had a category for NOID's and I won a red (2nd place) ribbon for one of mine once. But the rule for showing the orchids, both NOID and named is that they need to have been in your possession for a minimum of 6 mos. I'm surprised it was allowed to show and win newly purchased plants!

I can totally relate to orchid fatigue. I go though phases where I am less interested in them and wish I could get someone else to take care of them for a while. Last year I bought several new orchids and a terrerium. Then I got pregnant. I was too tired to properly care for the orchids and developed a strong aversion to there fragrance. I didn't even feel like reading about them. I lost a masdevallia and a mini phal due to lack of water. Now I feel more interested in the orchids, but since I have a new baby, I am going to stick with low maintenance orchids for a while.

If I could make a suggestion, automate as much as possible! That has helped me a ton. I live in a highland location that is quite dry and I made a huge humidifier, essentially, it changed a lot for me because I didn't have to refill those damn small modifiers all the time, sometimes several times a day. It sucked. And now I'm doing some plumping where I have tapped into the garden line in my hose to run a timer and water to my grow area where a fine mister goes off to water my air loving plants. Well that last part isn't done but it will be this weekend since the snow will keep me from my out door chores.
Also, in terms of plants, don't know your taste in orchids, but neofinetia are great plants that are small, require little care and when potted in the traditional manner, always look nice.

at our Society Show you have to actually enter the orchid to be eligible for a ribbon. I put on a display - for fun - and won a red ( 2nd ), and had a few noids as "filler" which weren't individually entered.
Its an honour system and there's no accounting for people who want a ribbon anywhichwayhow
