Gorgeous Tucker! - Nice color and beautiful plant.
Yes, The Orchid Kid, there is parental influence on the branching habits of phalae's; the perfect culture allows the plant to do it's best, but if it is not a multi-branching variety, it will be less likely to do so. Several spikes can be produced by a strong plant, but the branching habit of those spikes is dependent on the genetic influence. Ph. amabilis branches a lot and is used a lot in breeding. If this species is in the parentage the spike will be more likely to branch out with many flowers produced, although they tend to be smaller.
I just let my phalae's do as they want. The plant is healthy looking and I get spikes every year, sometimes multiple times a year; I have gotten multiple spikes, but that is not always. Could it do better - yes. Am I happy with it's current performance - yes. Unless you are only growing phalae's or orchids of a similar culture, then it is difficult to provide the exact environment for all your plants at once.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could?
Just make your plant as happy as you can and it will do the same in return!
