How long does it take any type of Orchid from starting to grow a spike until it flowers? I have a Phal that has taken ages and the buds are just forming.

A long time.
Orchids are a lesson in patience.
My phal is still opening all its flowers, it's been about 3 months since I saw the spike.

I kind of quite like the slow unveiling. It's all part of the excitement. Also it helps make me a more patient person!

It depends on warm, light length, and food. The warmer it is the faster it grows spikes/flowers. The more it can be fed (coarser media/more vigorous air movement), the faster it grows.

Depends on the type of orchid, as well as environmental factors - Usually about three months, but some can take quite a bit longer. And in general, growth is faster in warm temps with as much as the particular orchid will take.

Thanks to all, though it has progressed slowly since about Xmas I was wondering how long it would take before the flowers finally appeared.
