spots on phal?
Default spots on phal?

Are these random spots caused by genetics or environmental factors? 2 of the flowers were spotless.

To me that looks to be genetics, though how heavy the spotting is my depend on environment as it develops. I don't think they are caused purely by environment from the look of them as they don't seem to be a 'problem' more just a colouration in the plant.

I agree, it looks like the flower is supposed to look like that. Some orchids have patterns that can be different on every flower.

I agree, it may just be genetics on this one. Has it bloomed before and did you see spotting before, or is this its first time blooming for you?

One of my phals looks different every time it blooms. Random purple blotches in no discernible pattern and in different amounts... I wouldn't be too worried. The amount of coloration can change depending on light spectrum and intensity as well as the type of other nutrients it receives.

Those spots are normal and occur randomly on the hybrids of the "Dalmatian" type.

Now, temperatures, feeding, light, and the age of the phal can change on some botanic species or some hybrid lines the flowering in many ways.

Your phal is yellow harlequin type and the maroon spotting is what the plant was bred for.

As mentioned above, certain growing condition can affect spotting.

While size and number of spots can be random gene expression, meaning, each flower and each flowering season, it will be different.

Buds developed under bright light and cooler temperature tend to have heavier spotting on certain hybrids.
