Question Slipper Orchid Question

Hi Everybody,

This is a beginner and plant ID question so I wasn’t exactly sure where to post it. I recently bought a slipper orchid from Home Depot and of course it came with no ID. I did some surfing to see if I could find what it is but I realize as a hybrid the search is probably futile. If anybody would like to take a guess at it please do.

In my research I came across paphiopedilum and phragmipedium. Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between the two?....

Thanks for any help

Jo Ann

Ooooh that's a pretty baby! And such wonderful foliage! There are lots of experts on here, you probably won't get an ID but then you can name it after someone close to you.

Wow! You found THAT at your Home Depot? Our HD never has anything that looks like that

Sorry I can't help with an ID but here's some info on Paphs and Phrags:

I'm certainly no expert on slippers, but it looks like a paph with P. delenatii in it's parentage somewhere. Great score!

Nice little number! It reminds me of Paph.Gina short (Pinocchio x delenatii)
Phrags don't have the nice molted leaves the way the some paphs do.

Thanks everyone for your responses...

There is a little bit of a story behind this plant. Basically I am a plant nut... I love horticultural challenges. I found this treasure hidden amongst the phalaenopsis that were through blooming. I spied her and I had to have her... Price tag said $25.00. I quickly snatched it up and ran looking for a manager now I don’t know how your guy’s garden centers work but from my own personal experience most people who work in these chain store nurseries usually don’t have too much knowledge about plants. I just had to have this plant but not for $25.00! so I found my man and quickly went into my monolog of how it didn’t look very healthy and I wasn’t sure if it would survive or not and would he give me a discount?…actually this plant was in spike and since I took the last picture it has bloomed 2 more flowers and is working on a third….now I’m not an orchid expert or even close but I do have a decent eye for healthy plants. So to end this story he gave me 50% off and offered me a deal on other past blooming orchids if I was interested. I am not embarrassed to say that I've stooped to such low measures for a plant....yes I have no shame.........

Stoop to low measure!?
Many orchids end up by the wayside unless someone as keen-eyed as you finds them. Those chain stores throw away or return more orchids than are purchased.
Thanks for saving those little babies
I see no shame in it at all.
If it leaves you with some pocket change to buy more orchids .. well ... Bonus!

Jo Ann,

What a beauty, you lucky person you!! I think it is very much like Paph. Deperle, but is showing a lot of pink in the colour.
