Spraying water works fine for dust, but for water or fertilizer deposits that's not enough. For that you need to use milk or lemon juice for best results. That means wiping each leaf one by one.
And even, when the plants are really dusty I take the time to clean them leaf by leaf. In the summer I can put them outside and rinse them off with the hose, but not the rest of the year.
Mayo is for bringing out a nice shine. BUT don't use tons of it! That's an invitation for problems. Use a tiny dot of it and then buff well with a soft cloth/tissue. The leaves should not feel greasy after.

First Rays has a product called Rise & Shine. It states, "A unique blend of safe ingredients that cleans you plants thoroughly, leaving them naturally bright, shiny, yet still natural looking.
Kills soft-bodied insects on contact, and safely removes dust, dirt, water spots, and chemical- and insect residues of all sorts"
just spraying with water is what I had been doing, but I recently moved & we have way less dust here than the other house so I wanted to have a nice clean shine and hopefully just my watering & cleaning will keep it up now, I did not have any lemon j so I mixed the mayo and water together , cleaned off the leaves one by one then sprayed/wiped the mixture off, so far so good!! thank you guys!!

There is a product named Leaf Shine that is great at cleaning and making leaves shine. I get it at Home Cheapo but you can get it at Wall Mart, KMart, Lowes, and many other stores. Small bottle and lasts a long time.
