large, top heavy oncidium - solutions?
Default large, top heavy oncidium - solutions?

hi all, I came into possession of a large oncidium species (varicosum i think). its in tip top shape and flowered last year. the plant is very big with quite a lot of it growing outside the pot. the pot itself is around 150mm. it has very long leaves which add to the instability. at the moment i have resorted ti wiring the pot to some of the bench otherwise it just falls over.
what is a common solution? I was thinking about putting the plant, pot and all, into a terracotta pot but i would have to get quite a large one to stop this bad boy from toppling over. maybe mounting would solve it?

anyway, very keen for suggestions, solutions etc..

thank you very much

It sounds like a mount for this beaut would have to be huge - I usually just do what you mentioned, sit it in another pot; I usually fill the outer pot with potting medium to create more humidity.
You could possibly sit it on a brick or small concrete pad and wire it to that, but then you have a drainage issue.
A pic would help in giving you suggestions.
Best of luck -
Steve

The next time you repot you could place a heavy stone in the new pot to increase the weight of it. To sit it in another pot is a good option too.

All my orchids are in those glazed orchid pots... they are great at weighing down the plant.

Get a heavy concrete or terracotta pot for it.

Careful with unsealed concrete - it's very alkaline. Water on the surface will reach a pH of over 11 in a matter of hours. It will kill roots on contact.

sems to work
