Bought Cymbidium - Any personal advice?
Thumbs up Bought Cymbidium - Any personal advice?

Hello Fellow Orchid collectors and experts, I just bought a new cymbidium orchid for $9. Yes $9 from Home Depot.

I read alot about the cymbidium alliance on this forum but I would like some advice and tips from you all who own or have owned in the past.

Here's a picture of it in this thread. I was very excited to get one at such a nice price.

Nice looking plant and flowers, I wish I could help you but I've not had much luck growing them, maybe I can learn to take care of them too

Can you give a bit of info on your climate, etc? Around here we grow them as garden plants but that's not a luxury everyone has unfortunately.

Sure. I am growing it in So. Cal and I am currently growing them indoors. It is about 73-75 degrees in the day and 60-65 degrees in the night.
I know that in CA, you can grow the Cymbidiums in the outdoors.
Right now, the daytime high is like lower 70s and low is like upper 40s.

I have killed a LOT of cymbids, so I will tell you what I know (???) - sounds crazy but I know the culture, just could not give the plants what they need.
They want BRIGHT light, not direct, but very bright;
They want cool temps - not cold, but cool; no higher than 75-80 F;
They want high humidity, but will not tolerate moisture standing on their leaves;
They wants constant air movement;
They need ample water, but need to dry out between, - they will not tolerate standing in water.
SLUGS LOVE THEM AS IF THEY WERE DESSERT- leaves, roots, pseudobulbs, every part. Same for locust and grasshoppers and small dogs.
They can be bad about scale and mealies as they have a lot of crevices for them to hide in.
Their blooms are beautiful, but they are just too demanding for me where I live. I wish I could grow them outdoors, but in Indiana, USA it is too hot and too humid w/ no air movement for them to tolerate it.
As I say - I have killed many a cymbidium - but finally had to decide it was a love affair that was not meant to be; since then I have just had to drown my sorrows by having lasting affairs with bulbophyllums, cattleyas, phalaenopsis, pescatorea, oncidiums, sophronitis, miltonias, --- well, you get the point.
Best of luck - I am sure that someone will give you better advice that helps you grow yours, and I will be watching, but have accepted - just not meant to be for me.
Steve

Thanks Steve for the comment. I hope to use your advice fully. I may keep the cymbidium as an indoor plant.

Please wait for others to add to this post as they will most likely tell you exactly what I am doing wrong. Honestly, my orchid mentor gave me about 25 cym'bids about 30 years ago as he had upgraded his collection and I was always getting his "cast-offs" (I was so lucky and oblivious to it); I followed his lead exactly, except for not having a greenhouse to winter them in. It did not matter as before summer was over I had none left - they were either munched to pieces or just died off due to something I was or was not doing. I read up and read up, talked to him, did everything I knew of, but they were destined to become mulch.
I MAY give them a try now as I am doing 100% florescent light culture. I really should not tempt myself - I have enough 'lovers' now and do not need to be reaching into old flames again.
Best of luck-
Steve

Everyone down here grows them outdoors...
My garden center down the street has a year long display of them that's outdoors. And despite the fact that they have perfect greenhouse with ideal conditions they still sell them outdoors with the patio plants
