Please wait for others to add to this post as they will most likely tell you exactly what I am doing wrong. Honestly, my orchid mentor gave me about 25 cym'bids about 30 years ago as he had upgraded his collection and I was always getting his "cast-offs" (I was so lucky and oblivious to it); I followed his lead exactly, except for not having a greenhouse to winter them in. It did not matter as before summer was over I had none left - they were either munched to pieces or just died off due to something I was or was not doing. I read up and read up, talked to him, did everything I knew of, but they were destined to become mulch.
I MAY give them a try now as I am doing 100% florescent light culture. I really should not tempt myself - I have enough 'lovers' now and do not need to be reaching into old flames again.
Best of luck-
Steve
