I have a plant of Psychopsis papilio that I would like to mount. Would it be happier with it's roots bare or maybe a bit of sphagnum at the roots? Thanks for any info.
I have my papilio's potted bare in a tree fern pot. It's like one of those tree fern mounts except in the shape of a hollowed out pot. I don't use anything with them because they have been touchy about sphag in the past. Mine don't like to stay wet very long, and they really hate sour medium.
So far so good. The roots have buried themselves into the treefren, and that dries pretty quicky for them after being watered.
Sounds like fertilizer burn, I give mine a thorough flush at mid-week, to prevent this. Some moss will help maintain it, between waterings. Here's a link to how I care for mine: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ts-cocoon.html
If it was in a pot, I'd say no moss.....but being mounted, it's going to dry quickly!
