Maybe it was the fertilizer, then. It could be like for people who eat too many carrots and their skin turn orange. Doesn't do any harm, just changes your colour for a day or so

Mhmm got an idea…

The color depends of the pigments at work in the roots, if the roots have light they will be green by the law of Chlorophyll A and B. If there's not light like inside the pot, they will be white, in between it's some yellow.

Maybe the light coming onto the roots has only triggered the carotenoids hence the reddish color, and some days of a better light triggered the chlorophylls so back to green.

Just a made up theory that I hope is coherent.

What was the lightning available for the roots before The Great Red Phal Roots Mystery occurred? Was it changed after the watering?

Someone at one point proposed fursarium, but it's violet, not red.

if hes using city water my thoughts on red roots is the water he is using is high in iron and maybe chlorine. iron and chlorine make an ionic compound. red iron oxide. rust.

we experienced this RED phenomenon when I worked in the laundry business. White sheets turning orange bec the chlorine bleach was causing the iron in the water to fall out and the tiny particles collected in the fibers. We had to start using 12% hydrogen peroxide based chemicals and no use sodium hypochlorite based products. The Orange sheets problem solved

Could also have a lot of iron bacteria if hes using well water. Its got to do with his water.

Thanks Dave,

He lives in Birminham UK and they have notoriously high Iron content in the water. We're not far away and we get orange deposits all the time.

However for me that affects the plants by leaving rusty deposits on the outside of the surface roots. Rather than changing the colour deep inside the roots. His also showed much redder where I get orange deposits. No idea, it's a possibility though as it is stronger where he lives.

lepetitmartien, I'll have to ask about light and whether it's been out of a cache pot since the roots faded again. Interesting idea

All the roots of my phals that come into contact with a glazed pot do that. Forever orange and red. Still healthy... just red.
Maybe whatever does that to my phals is also present in your water?
