Handheld misters and sprayers. Male
Default Handheld misters and sprayers.

Hey all you indoor growers, especially those who are humidity challenged, what do you use as a hand sprayer or mister for your plants? My biggest need is for my tolumnias and my vanda type orchids but for also applying chemicals and pest control. I got a liter hand held sprayer and liked it but it broke the third time I used it. Fail.

I've been looking at a two liter hand held by Solo. It has a telescopic nozzle which I would find helpful reach those hard to reach plants.

Input appreciated.

I use a Flo-Master 2-Gallon Sprayer that I got from walmart for $15 ....
just make sure to leave 2 inches liquid space before you close it....pump it seven times (more than 10 pumps and the nozzle erupts liquid and you need to open and close it again=its an all plastic material except the sprayer holes; so the temperature in summer makes the opening and closing tricky=in winter its just a breeze....the plastic grids harden with the cold) it can deal with hard to reach layerings of pots.

Thx Bud. I had one of those but it got wrecked this summer by a hail storm that last three hours and a foot of hail. You wouldn't think that thick plastic would shatter but it did.

I'm returning the Hudson Handy Sprayer (1/2 gal) to OSH. Its got a loud pump squeak otherwise worked fine, felt sturdy. I just found it too big for my little collection.

If you have a small collection, any spray bottle that is rinsed out well or one that you buy just for that purpose will work. I used the 1/2 gallon Hudson sprayer for all my watering and misting needs until I bought too many orchids. I now keep a 2 gallon ready with water / fert. mix or just plain water and I mist and water using only this. I relegated my two Hudson's for use with one now a bleach sprayer and the other for fungicide. I find them handy and as far as a 'squeaking' noise when you pump, the plunger was just not lubricated inside the pressurizing tube. I just use a small amount of vegetable shortening and, after dismantling the unit, I lube the plunger with the shortening and put it all back together again; it works fine. Or just take it back to the store and get one that has been properly lubed. These do wear out as I have gone through a couple of them in three years, but they work very well for me.
Good luck finding something that fits your need. Again, about any spray bottle will work, but if you reuse one, wash and rinse it VERY well.

I just use a spray bottle I bought at a five and dime store locally for a couple bucks. I've had it for a few years now and still works great. It was with household stuff, so i assume it's for laundry or cleaning, nothing special. I will get a second on soon for the other non-orchids I have that require distilled water.

I bought some pyrethrum based pest spray and re-used the bottles. They hold maybe half a litre each but they're light weight. I have one in each hand and squirt as fast as I can. Great exercise for the forearms and wrists! For those hard to reach plants I adjust the nozzle, stand right back, and use them like water pistols.

I generally like to keep the plants mounted at a height I can check on them for bugs, but I do have two big dendrobium speciosum var. hillii mounted up high. They love a good squirt.

I envy the people who have those hand sprayers last for years. I break them in a few months or even weeks!! I wouldn't say I'm overly rough with them but I do live in a dry environment and I mist air loving plants a lot. I also tend to not realize my hands own strength! Lol oh well.

I got my solo sprayer this week and its fantastic!!! At 20 US dollars, it'll pay for itself quickly as in blow through about six hands sprayers a year!!! This one seems quite durable.

I think (I'll check at home after work today) is goody I think. As in the hair care stuff. As i said I've had it for years, use it almost daily, and when I use it I spray almost the whole bottle each time and it holds about a liter. Tires my poor hands out long before it hurts the bottle!

Good luck with yours Ryan! I hope it works out better for you!
