Default OMG! Is that a spike?

See that little nib coming out of the lower leaves? Is that a spike or just a weird looking root? I hope it's a spike! I got this Phal NoID about 3 mos ago in a pot and mounted it about 2 weeks ago. If it's a spike, does that mean it's happy on the mount or stressed to the point that it's trying to reproduce because it thinks it's going to die? Oh, I hope this is good news. Thanks, OB friends!

Your roots look good, I think. Do they turn green when you water? If so, the orchid is spiking because it is happy!
My phal noID is spiking now, too. Will be ages til I see blooms.....

OMG! Is that a spike? Male
Default Yes, that is a spike

blackvine;
Congratulations ! You are a proud parent of a new spike (well, more like a surrogate parent) !! And a beauty at that -- plus I really like the mount it is on - it's so natural looking. I realize that the photos are just upside down, and that your plant probably grows upward, but most people don't realize that, in it's natural setting, a phalaenopsis will often grow laterally or even upside down, which keeps the crown from filling with water and developing crown rot. Many of my Phalaenopsis grow to one side or the other, almost flopping over before I re-pot them. This is just the growth habit of these Orc's
Great, healthy looking plant. Again - Congrats!!!
Steve

Thanks, Steve! Well, I researched mounting Phals before I did this one and found they do indeed like growing upside down, so that's how I did it - the pics are right side up! I'm so glad it seems to be healthy, too!

Congrats - it looks very happy! I figured you were growing it crown down, since the spike is growing in the opposite direction
