I really enjoy going to my local orchid grower and then going home and doing days of research to decide if I have the correct cultural parameters..wow

Ray.....this the beginner section...

just buy one (if someone answers your question) do your best to grow, and if it dies, try something different or move on....
My comments not only answered the question, but explained my logic for that response, which I consider to be the appropriate way to respond in a "beginner section".

Advising someone to :just try it and see if it dies is ridiculous (to put it mildly).

AND...

Jan's response suggests that "beginner" may not be the appropriate category anyway. That response had a lot more intelligence built into it than yours.

While I agree to some extent I have a lot of orchids that I have 'just tried' as an experiment. I have orchids growing in my garden happily that shouldn't grow well outside here but they do and I have a masdevallia growing like mad, thriving on neglect and flowering profusely under my patio that everyone seems to think is notoriously difficult to keep happy. I have others that I have tried and failed with but I went into those endeavours knowing that I may not succeed with them. Honestly if I hadn't just had a go with many of the ones I have I wouldn't own them at all as the circumstances they are growing in certainly wouldn't agree with what others would have me think they need.

Ok Ray and Ron..

Put a little perspective in your lives...

Telling someone to take a chance and possibly have great results vs don't try anything if there is a possibility it could fail is sad....

We sometimes learn best from failure

Smile fellas... There're only plants!

You are definitely the most condescending person on OB. Congrats.

Isurus79

Please refrain from personal attacks.

They are not nice if you don't have anything positive to add.

ENOUGH!

This thread is being locked.

Personal attacks, insults, lack of respect towards others will not be tolerated!

It IS possible to disagree without personal insults, etc. One can simply 'ignore' the poster you disagree with, but post your own opinion on the matter. Or, say that you disagree because in your experience ...

My patience has worn thin this week, with this being the third thread I have had to post a warning regarding personal insults/attacks, lack of respect, etc. If this continues, there will be no warnings - just infractions.

Many orchids do well over a fairly wide range of temp - but others do not. I can grow some cool growers, because they have some heat tolerance, but not others.
I have learned the hard way that temps can make a difference in many cases.
So, for myself at least - I would appreciate if I had asked about a particular plant, and someone with a lot of experience and knowledge on the subject advised me that it might not be suitable for my climate. That said - I would still be free to try if I wished to.
