As this is the beginner section, such advice is not only warranted, but common sense.
Just giving my own advice on growing "neat" orchids that "experts" say need certain growing conditions.....just buy it and try it in your conditions....orchids are extremely hardy...

Multiple websites where you can buy them from anywhere from $10 to $35.

It just seems like a rude way to give advice. Ending your comment with "sheesh" (which I see was edited away) is also not advice.

Geeez.......I would think you would try lecturing someone for giving unsolicited advice that starts out with "DO NOT" and actually uses the words "cultural parameters" to someone only looking for a vendor...

sheesh....please use a less angry tone....

peace...joy...orchid love

p.s I edited this too....would the correct term be "culture" parameters or cultural parameters?

I'll leave that to the experts...

sheesh....editied again...looks like "cultural" is ok

jeeez..edited still again......sheesh I wish I could type better...

Geez (or should it be "sheesh"?) Guys!

I didn't mean this post to become so contentious! Just wanted to find a vendor for a "Monkey Orchid". Hence I posted it on the beginner forum since it's a simple question I thought would be of interest to a wide audience of the "Orchid Board".

I thank Nanook for his support - I also thought Ray's original comments somewhat stern. Perhaps it was just the wording, with well-meant intentions to save me some money on a hard-to-grow orchid. For the orchid enthusiasts who are likely to visit this site, I agree with Nanook - just buy the plant and challenge yourself! I culture 60+ orchids exactly because I thought they were "neat" and "cool", as well as a bunch of other "weird" plants for the same reasons.

To answer my originally posted question: Andy's Orchids (ironically less than 15 miles from my house) sells the "Monkey Orchid" in mature stage for 35 bucks:

Andy's Orchids - Orchid Species - Dracula - simia

That equals about 3 drinks at a restaurant around here. In that comparison, I'll gladly give up the forgettable drinks and try my hand at getting my own Monkey to bloom!

Peace!

JanS, I say if you think you've got a good plan to grow them then go for it! As I mentioned in my previous post, I don't and yet I still try. It's the research, experimenting and trying that makes the hobby fun in my opinion, lol...

On a side note, I completely forgot to give links but am glad (and jealous) that Andy's is sooooo close to you!!!!

I grow D. simia along with a few other Dracula species. Summer temps climb up to 80F for a few short weeks, with nights always dropping into the 50's. Winters are cooler with 70F days and 45F nights. Humidity is always greater than 70%.

Also this species (and most Dracula's) sends spikes out the sides and bottom of the pot so requires a hanging net pot or mounted.
