Paphiopedilum Maudiae- Advice needed - Orchid Board

Today, I spotted a Paphiopedilum Maudiae orchid in the "bargin bin" section of a plant store for $10.00 (4 inch pot) . The poor thing is not in the best of shape (to a novice's eye). One set of leaves are very dried out and the others look OK, except you can tell that it is stressed. There is however some life still in this plant and I was wondering if these fellows can be rejuvenated by repotting and care or is it best to spend more money for a better/healthier plant.

Hi Ian,

Check the roots on the top, they should be firm. Also check for wobble if it does ... it probably has a weak root system - I would leave it there.
Positive note - Paphs can grow new leaves and new fans.

What caught my eye was the mottled leaves. Very beautiful appearance. I have investigated this orchid and the flower it produces is stunning too.
So I thought that if it was possible to rejuvenate this plant, it would be worth it.
Do they "perk-up" fairly quickly, or do they grow slowly?
I have rescued a number of Phalaenopsis orchids that looked poorly and have responded quickly to increased care.
If you think that it would be a chore to bring this Maudiae back, then I guess I will pass it by.

Ian,

The Maudiaes are fast growers and can bloom in low light. You already have the talent for resue. I say go for it provided the roots are in good shape - smell the media if you have concern, HAY I do it

Thanks Gloria for the encouragement. I will check the roots and give the orchid the "once over" to make sure.
I love a challenge, plus I am hopelessly bitten by the orchid bug!

It can definitely be a chore rescuing an ailing orchid, but you really learn a lot from it. I think that if you can bring one back from the brink it is even more of a reward for you when it flowers. I would go for it if I thought I could save it...but $10 is a LITTLE steep for a sad 'chid.

Well, I talked him down to $8.00 (Cdn)....he wanted $28 for a healthy one....so I was up for the challenge.
I'll let you know if it lives....and if it doesn't.....lesson learned.
