I grow many different varieties of Den. kingianum here in Northern Ca because they are so well suited as companion plants to Cymbidiums. I have inserted them into pockets reamed out in artificial lava rock and put them in other media in containers of various types over the years, but my specimen plants all end up in fine fir bark with 20% medium perlite added.
This is one of the toughest species I grow and it thrives on neglect, abundant sun, skipped waterings, close to freezing temps and heat waves. It is a species I would put at the top of my list for beginner growers, if they can put it outside. The higher the light, the more blooms and, as the "king" said, the shorter the canes. The color range is also awesome from the alba forms to the almost black purple forms. There are even some spotted forms, all created by sib cross (within the species) hybridizing.
... and not to forget, they are extremely FRAGRANT!
