There are temperature tolerant species that can adapt to wider temp ranges.
I personally have had success with Cattlayas, Neofinitas, some of the Dendrobiums, and some of the Cymbidiums.
They can go from the upper 30's to low 40's in winter to 100 in summer. The thing I find is that the cold/hot temps are tolerated but not for very long.
The plants must be on the dry side when the temperature dips and lots of air movement and frequent water when it's hot.
What is your humidity like?
I would have thought there would be more light in the south window or are you too far south for that?Are you planning on growing indoors or outdoors or both?
