I would like to try a stanhopea. Can someone suggest an easy one to try? I don't have a lot of room and I would like one without a strong odor. Thanks.
Hi Minda!
Without strong odor...it's a problem! The easiest Stans to grow and bloom in fact have strong and sweet fragrances (Stan tigrina and nigroviolacea, the later probably a variant of the first one, not a species), like vanilla and chocolate. I suggest Stan wardii, easy to find and not so scented. Another option is Stan inodora (beside its name, it has a scent).
Welcome to the "Stan world" and good luck!
Iwould reccomend Candida. Small from a stan, fairly easy to grow and a prolific bloomer. Has the scent of wintergreen that isnt to overpowering as long as your not standing there with your nose in the blooms, which you might find is harder to do than it sounds.
My Stanhopea reichenbachina is a source of joy all summer long. Blooming several times with two ivory white waxy flowers per spike, induced without any special treatment. Flowers normally don´t penetrate the medium, so you don´t need a mesh basket. And well, I need my eyes and not my nose to verify if the buds open in the greenhouse.
