Brenda, I have found Kelp or sometimes packaged as seaweed extract at several different hydroponics stores. I also got a bottle of First Ray's Solo product that includes MSU fertilizer. It seems for me that any type I have tried which one was liquid, one freeze dried powder and then Ray's liquid combo all seem to have amazing effect on encouraging the plants to grow roots. It is supposed to help with other growth and blooming too but the most immediate thing I see is the roots, which of course will feed the rest of the plant and produce better growth. I just mix up a weak solution in water and sometimes add fertilizer as well. When I am treating a sick plant or re-potting I don't use fertilizer. No science to my method-just what I do.

It looks like a new root in the third picture and I agree with the advice above.
Rosie, in the 2nd picture the roots look a bit greener and the one piece of root on the lower left of the photo looked to have some life. I agree, they are pretty dehydrated, but am thinking maybe this one could plump up and be viable if it had water!

My recomendation is sphag and bag. Put the orchids in straight sphagnum moss and thoughroughly water, then wait until the moss is moist but not soaking wet, and then put the potted orchid into a large, clear bag. I've rescued and saved many orchids this way.

My parents have been growing orchids since I can remember and they told me that when I repot my orchids, that I should cut all roots that do not look healthy (roots that look wrinkly, hollow, falling apart). They said that this (with some Superthrive) will promote the growth of more roots. I've been doing this for a while and my orchids are still thriving. Anyone here do this?
