No fertilizer at all? How does the plant get nutrients?

I plant live moss in with the masdevallias. The live moss provides extra nutrients, retains moisture, and looks pretty. Anyway plants don't need any provided nutrition, thats what photosynthesis is for.

I fertilize every 2 weeks with 1/2 strength fertilizer for Masdevallia.

Not so sure about these statements. How does live moss provide nutrients?

I noticed that some growers in Australia use slow release fertilizer so I just added a very small amount in the spring.

Now thats how I think fertilizers should be used (if ever), only as a extra boost during a plants prime growth period.

31drew31: Since moss is an living organism, I assume it releases some sort of beneficial waste, like fungi would. I could be wrong. Also when moss dies and is replaced, that dead moss will break down and release stored protein, this I am sure of ( soil obtains most of it nutriance through this process ) Anyway I doubt this is equivalent to fertilizer. But as I've mentioned plants don't need it anyway.

So what do you think is the issue with this one? It's not mites as I've tested over and over. I had some minor leaf drop, but it keeps getting these more like looking marks. Still growing new leaves though. It's a Nancy hybrid which is supposed to be more heat tolerant.

Oh, and it's only on the undersides of the leaves.

Looks like a fungal infection to me. I have the same hybrid and have gotten those spots before. This happens when water sits on the leaves and temp drops. Overall its not a major health risk, just unsightly. I would wash the infected leaves with rubbing alcohal. This will kill the fungus, but the spots are permanet. Fungal infections are common among masdevallias because they are grown in damp, cool envirnments, where fungus/mold thrives.
