Re-potting Phalaenopsis while in bloom
Default Re-potting Phalaenopsis while in bloom

While I am well versed in general houseplant care, I am new to Orchids. I could not resist the deal that HD had on Orchids. Of course the Phal that I purchased was potted in Sphagnum moss in one of those plastic pot inserts. I am not a fan of the way Sphag retains moisture and would rather re-pot in a mix of fir bark, charcoal, medium grade Perlite and a pinch of Sphagnum.
The consensus seems to be not to re-pot Orchids in general while in bloom. However, there seems to be mixed opinions on re-potting Phalaenopsis Orchids while in bloom.
My Phal is in bloom and the roots look very healthy. I could wait until a more appropriate time to re-pot. But, I am concerned about root health if I keep it in Sphag. It is mid September, temps here in Boulder, Co are in the low 80s- upper 70s. My Phal gets filtered eastern sunlight and supplemental fluorescent. It looks to be healthy in all respects. What are the risks of re-potting at this time? How likely am I to lose the blooms if I re-pot now?
Thanks!
D Rock

My suggestion is to slip it out of the plastic and put it into a Terracotta pot for the time being. Then remove the sphagnum after it's done flowering.

If the plant is healthy, I don't think changing the media would do any harm, but you might lose the flowers or they might not last as long as they would otherwise. If you feel uncomfortable with watering in sphag, I'd go for the change. Or I would learn to water very, very carefully

My first orchid is this huge noid phal that I had initially bought in actual potting soil, and I waited a year to repot and the plant was in spike when I changed the media from dirt to plain bark. It didn't miss a beat, but gave me less flowers. And when I repotted it after it just finished flowering this year, it gave 2 other spikes 2 weeks later XD

Phals are very hardy so long as you don't get water into the crown. A radical change of media might just stall it a bit, but it should be ok! My

I don't think you will lose the entire load of blooms, but they might be shorter lived.

I like to wait it out til most of the blooms are done.
However if you are concerned about the roots, just go ahead and take a peak then go from there.

Its best to repot if indeed the roots are being smothered but bad/old media.

Good luck
