Tiny light tan bugs that move quickly on Phal
Default Tiny light tan bugs that move quickly on Phal

Hello! I have a fairly new Phal from Wegmans (about 6 mo) and after treating mealy bugs with alcohol swabs, I am now noticing a lot of very tiny, about the size of a pinpoint, light tan colored bugs that move over the leaves very quickly. They emerge from the leaf crevices and also succump to the alcohol swabs. Can anyone tell me what they are and if they are a danger to the plant. And if so, how can I eliminate them? Thank you all.

THANKS EVERYONE!.. for your comments. My Phal is 6 mo old and is very healthy with no visible leaf damage to date, so I am inclined to believe that these mites are predatory. I did order Liquid Ladybug but I am probably not going to use it. Thanks all!

Predatory mites? If so they are not harmful to the plant as they feed on other little bugs. On the other hand what they are feeding on might be harmful!

I don't think springtails as I've only ever seen them in the medium not on the leaves. It does sound like some type of mite, but not sure if they are likely to be harmful or not I'm afraid.

I think if they are fast moving that's generally a sign they are predatory ones. Hope so or mine are infested! (I'm having a debate at the mo about whether to spray all mine for mites. I think my mites are possibly controlling my fungus knats...)

That description sounds similar to some bugs on a phal of mine that recently succumbed to crown rot. They seem to be feeding off of the rotted part of the plant as I haven't seen them in media or on the roots. They were tan and moved very quickly. I poured some more hydrogen peroxide on the crown where they were and haven't seen them for a few days so I'm waiting to see if they pop up again. However I don't know if they are the same thing as yours though if your plant is healthy.

And yes I do still have said phal as all of the roots are still fat and green a week later. I'm holding out hope that the meristem tissue was not damaged, but I'm not counting on it.
