Little strange but looking for a "pointy" orchid...
Default Little strange but looking for a "pointy" orchid...

Hi I know this is a little strange but I'm looking for a few pictures of "pointy" orchids.

I mean a lot of what comes up on google have rounded petals but ideally I'm looking for some that have more of a point to them.

I love the look of orchids but would not be able to keep them but I had a tattoo of one done a few months back, I'm looking to add on to this with another orchid at either side of the one I already have

I'd like to have it done in purples as the one I have now is blue so any pictures you have that you wouldn't mind sharing with the possibility of it being translated in to a tattoo would be fantastic or even if you could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

Thanks.

Try looking for pictures of brassia, laelia, and B. nodosa. Many of those are pointy.

To name a few...Google images for:

Bletilla striata
Brassanthe Maikai 'Mayumi'
Cattleya perrinii (formerly Laelia)- great shape to this one!
Laelia longipipes
Leptotes bicolor (not all purple but it has purple in it)
Encyclia bractescens (not purple but very pointy)

Happy hunting!

Brassia hybrids are what immediately spring to mind when I think of pointy orchids whose flowers still have the 'typical orchid shape'

You can find many varieties of color and pattern in oncidium intergenic hybrids that have brassia in their parentage. Like this gallery.

Another idea would be the angraecum family. These tend to be white waxy flowers with a starlike shape. This blog has nice photography showcasing many different angraecum species.

Check out angraecum sesquipedale, which is also known as darwin's orchid. It's a cool looking orchid that also has a nice little story behind the speciess' discovery.

You might also be interested in the ghost orchid

The above all have more or less the typical orchid shape. If you're not set on that, then there's a whole world of sharp-petaled orchids out there.

For example, habinara medusae. Many masdevallias and bulbophylum orchids will also have elongated petals that taper to a sharp point.

Finally, you can browse the IOSPE orchid photos database to find many orchid types that are rarely if ever cultivated, and thus rarely discussed on sites like this one. There's many thousands of species to browse through, but many extremely odd and unique looking flowers to be found, if you have the time and patience for it.

Edited for clarity

a number of Oncidium alliance are 'star shaped' - as mentioned, Brassia - also Miltonia (not Miltoniopsis), intergenerics Miltassia, Deagamoara, Beallara
