I think you remember correctly Ray, but I recall there was more to it. Me recalling anything is an oxymoron so you get what you pay for.

I seem to remember that maintaining Phals above 75F inhibited flowering and then after being being delayed that way they were cooled as you said to initiate flowering. Following that they were returned to warmer conditions.

The reason I think that is important is that flowering was induced in plants in which it had first been delayed. Rosie would be correct in saying you can't hasten flowering, but you can delay it and then initiate it when desired.

If that's correct (I certainly can't prove it) then the idea of speeding up flowering needs to actually be considered as controlling flowering by delaying and then initiating it. Not by actually speeding it up.

If I recall the info (as suspect as anyone else), our memories are not too different, just focusing on differnt facets.

The idea was that the hybrid phals grew exceedingly well at elevated temperature, reaching maturity (i.e., "blooming size") in a short time period, but simply would not bloom if held there. If you want to consider that as delaying the bloom, I cannot argue, but maybe we should be thinking of this as "controlling" the bloom period.

By lowering the average temperature, they caused initiation of the flower spikes (which emerged 6- to 8 weeks later), the raised the temp again to continue with the accelerated growth.

If I'm not mistaken - also iffy - the work was sponsored by Taiwanese mass producers, or at least mostly benefitted them.
