Dendrobium wenzelii

Dendrochilum spp. are relatives of Coelogyne.

Like Coelogyne, they tend to like quite a bit of moisture, but still like air going to the roots. You should water after the potting media goes dry. Be careful not to overwater.

Typically the potting media of choice would either be small to medium grade bark or moss. When using moss, be careful not to pack it in too tight.

Try using a net pot.

Some species of Dendrochilum may even be just as sensitive as Coelogyne to high mineral content in the water. When you water, it is probably better to use RO water. It doesn't have to be 0 ppm TDS, but having it around 10 ppm - 20 ppm is usually good enough.

Many Dendrochilum species are intermediate to warm growing, with many tending to lean more towards being intermediate growing. A few species are temperature tolerant. In terms of your Dendrochilum wenzelii, it would probably be safer grown intermediate.

Grow under moderately bright indirect light to bright indirect light.

Many Dendrochilums tend to be pretty fast growing.

They should bloom pretty easily as well.

Moderate relative humidity is fine (60% - 80%).

Try not to overpot. It is easy to do so. The leaves and pseudobulbs will outgrow the root mass by comparison, this will trick people into potting the orchid into a larger pot. Do not do this.

My for what it's worth. I don't know much about Den. wenzelii, other than how I successfully grew it. Friend gifted me several starts over the years, and I repeatedly killed them...all attempts involved potting in various medium.

He said, treat them like you grow your Tolumnia and you'll be fine. I've grown it since then for four or so years, both on tree fern sitting in water saucer, and more successfully in a modified version of S/H (no-hole pot filled halfway with LECA, water level kept just below top of LECA, very high humidity and a fan for LOTS of air movement) and misting each morning when inside, twice a day when outside. Whew!!

Having said all that... I love my Tolumnia and work hard at my care of them. Den wenzelii, ummm, not so much. I gave away mine to a friend who was enchanted with them. She grows them same way, with success. For me, I just didn't care enough for them for the "extra" care they needed in my setup and culture.

This thread is confusing. The original question was about a Dendrobium. Others jumped in and thought it was about a Dendrochilum, a very different genus. There are both a Dendrobium wenzelii and Debdrochilum wenzelii.

The original poster said they were watering their Dendrobium, mounted on lava rock, once a week during August. That is why it died. Most Dendrobiums on mounts (Dendrochilums too) should be watered at least once per day.
