Default Fragrant orchid.

I am after a fragrant orchid. Something very easy to care for as still very new to this and not to cost to much.

Any recommendations on what to get and a website to get it from?

Thanks ian

Here are a few of my favorites:
1) Brassavola nodosa or Little Stars, mounted (the night scent is wondrous and the mounted brassavolas only need dunked two or three times a week. Needs vanda light (south facing window for best results)
2) Burrageara Nelly Isler 'Swiss Beauty'. This has a fantastic scent, grows great, blooms more than once a year, very pretty flowers. I love this one. *
3) Onc. Twinkle 'Fantasy'. Small but really has a nice fragrance. Easy to grow, too, blooms more than once a year. The flowers are pretty and the twinkles come in a variety of colors
4) Haraella rectrocalla small, smells citrusy, blooms frequently.
5) Neofinetia falcata. I grow these in net pots/vanda baskets with lava rock. There is good reason why these are so popular. Great plants, fantastic night fragrance.
6) Cattleya aclandiae. Another small and cute orchid, likes to be mounted, water three times a week, likes a south window...very easy.
7) Iwanagara Apple Blossom 'Fantastic'
(Dialaelia 'Snowflake' x Blc Orange Nugget). I love this one. Blooms once a year but so easy to grow and the scent is really great.
8) Maxillaria tenuifolia, the coconut orchid. Easy, forgiving, cute flowers, the smell is great

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Can you recommend a website to buy these from? Where I like in the UK my only option is to really buy online.

Easy Orchids? It comes up often when I search for orchids. I have no idea of their reputation. There are some vendors listed in the project plant recommendations. Hope that helps.

I've got a couple of Colmanara Wildcats that have a really nice jasmine scent in the mornings. They're common and cheap, and you should be able to get hold of them in normal nurseries and flower shops. Don't know if they're all fragrant though...

And the same goes for maxillaria tenuifolia. I think you'd be able to get this one in a shop instrad of online ordering. That way you can select your own plant instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best for the mail order.

If you are not worried about it being a named variety, just sniff any orchids you see! Commercial Phaleanopsis are rarely very scented, but 'Cambria' types can be (Wildcats come in this group, though the noid (no id) one I have didn't have a scent when it last flowered).

I'd be very surprised to find a Max. ten. in a UK shop. It's mostly Phals, Phals and more Phals! You do get some others, but usually very little labelling.

'Easy to grow' can depend on the conditions you can provide. Eg does your place get cold in winter, or are you someone who keeps the heating turned up and the rooms bone dry? Have you got a room or unheated greenhouse which gets cold in winter? Can you cope with an orchid that 'rests' in winter?

Also what kind of smells do you like?

For me the best orchid smell I've smelt yet is Lycaste aromatica. Smells of buttered cinamon. But that's a deciduous orchid, so you'd need to be able to control the urge to water too much in winter.

Max. ten is very difficult to kill, though I think some people find it a bit reluctant to flower.

If you like intense floral scents then Zygopetalums might work for you.

There's some EU sellers in this list: Orchids Vendors in Europe (Do read the whole thread, they are not all in the top list). CITES regulations mean you'd have to do paperwork and pay big fees to import orchids from outside the EU, but you can buy freely within the EU. I've ordered from Germany without trouble: if they post via DHL they seem really good.
