Vanda bloom issue/bud blast?
I was gone for a day and when I got back one of the buds on my Vasco. Viboon Velvet 'Perfection' is yellowed and crinkled. I've read about bud blast but never seen it. Is that what this is? I've attached two photos, it's hard to get a good one. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening to the other buds? It had just started spiking when I got this one a few weeks ago.
I grow this in glass vase culture. Its get watered 3 times a week and it gets sprayed/misted twice a day and fertilized weakly, weekly. It sits in a window and receives 2,000-3,000FC of light for about 7-8 hours a day.
Also, is there anything specific that causes this?

bud blast are usually caused by moisture or humidity issues....sometimes it also happens if you move the position of the plant from room to room which makes a light and humidity change issues....
the third theory is the plant aborted its blooms due to lack of energy or the leaves and roots failed to produce enough to sustain flower spike.
I boost humidity and moisture when I see spikes on any of my orchids....i put them near the humidifier and spray and water them liberally....I read somewhere to stop fertilizer when orchids are in bloom: but common sense dictates even in their natural habitat that the fertilizer consisting of bird droppings and leaf deacys are consistent even if the orchid is in bloom=so I do not withold fertilizer when my orchids are in bloom
* I also noticed in your picture that the aerial roots are wrinkly and dehydrated....you need to water more
Do not worry...the buds are still alive....do not let it blast on you....keep on moistening it

I wonder if there might be something about this particular cross. My Vasco. Viboon Velvet 'Perfection' has blasted it's buds on two successive spikes. Mine is still a small plant without too many roots but still I thought it was strange to get two spikes in a row that didn't produce flowers. I'm going to let mine get a little bigger and see what happens. Good luck with yours.

Bud-Thanks for the info. I'll try to water a little more.
Tucker-That's not good news! I was really looking forward to seeing these blooms. I'll let you know how the others turn out. I got mine from Carmela's, I may give them a call and see if they've had any issues with this plant. Though I doubt they'd admit it if they did.

you mentioned that you got it in spike a few weeks ago - I had one blast when I bought it in spike. I assume it was the shock of the new environment. Since then it has never blasted, so be patient and good luck

I agree with all of the above. Change of environment, low humidity, or a draft can cause bud blast. Good luck!

My Vasco. Viboon Velvet 'Perfection' has opened its flowers....I noticed by the fragrance it emanates at night...they are smaller than last time blooms but more flowers in its spike this time....this almost blasted but I just watered it more and gave it warmth and humidity boost: notice the second layer from below blasted two flowers

What a beautiful plant! I'm watering it a good bit more, so let's hope I can save some buds!

Does it get sun on both sides? Dr. Motes suggests this is a requirement for Vandas, although I don't have the experience to confirm/deny this allegation, I did want to pass it on. Perhaps someone with more experience than I can comment as I've only had a Vanda for two months now.

It does get light primarily on the side away from the buds. I can easily turn it so it receives equal light on both sides.
