Most catts and for that matter, most of their kin, like to be watered well and then left to dry completely. I weigh the pot by hand when I know it is wet, wet, wet, and then weigh it by hand when it is dry. You can feel the difference easily. I dip all my orchids in a 5 gallon bucket of RO water (actually a couple different batches of RO water because I have over 350 orchids and don't want to water them all in the same batch of water) and keep it there until I feel it is as wet as it will get. Then I put it back on the shelf and don't water it again until it is light to the touch or heft. As for mounting, do it. Take a chance. Phals like to be mounted and they are cheap at the box stores. Catts and laelias also take to mounting well. It is easy and rewarding. I mount the orchids that haven't responded to any otther method of potting. Here are a couple of examples. If you want more, let me know.
